What Happens When Christians Disobey God? 10-15-24
Disobedience is sin, and when we fall into sin, we are out of fellowship with God. Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness (1 John 3:4). The verse did not say whoever is a sinner; it says whoever commits (partakes in) sin. It is an act, not being in a state of.
Fellowship with Him and One Another
This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness [commit sin], we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us (1 John 1:5-10).
Verse eight says: If we say we have no sin, this does not mean that we are sinners; we fall into sin. The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the Lord upholds him with His hand (Psalm 37:23-24).
I want to bring three things to your attention: If you leave your mother and go astray, is she still your mother? When you walk away from her, your relationship with you and your mother never changes; you lose fellowship. It’s the same with God, who is our Father!
The prodigal son chose to walk away from his father, but he came to his senses, went back to his father, and asked for forgiveness, he was restored back into fellowship with his father (Luke 15:11-31).
When Covid struck, many people never assembled back with the saints; they were and are out of fellowship. One can never experience the joy of being in fellowship when they are distant from others. It’s the same with our Father; when we are out of fellowship with Him. Jesus said: These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full (John 15:11). That is not possible if we are out of fellowship with the Father.
Internet - The phrase “fall from grace” often signifies a spiritual decline where an individual or community moves away from the grace and favor of God. This can occur through sin, disobedience, or a rejection of faith. In biblical contexts, such a fall can lead to a sense of alienation from God, resulting in a loss of spiritual vitality and connection. My words- This is called backsliding in the Old Testament.
Billy Graham association - The Old Testament uses the term “backsliding” to speak of those who have been near to God but have allowed sin to take them away from Him. Excerpt - Backsliding in Scripture is always seen as a very serious matter.
Nothing keeps a born-again believer out of heaven, but walking in disobedience will cause us to lose fellowship with our Father until we repent and ask Him to forgive us (1 John 1:9).
This is crucial- Being out of fellowship with our Father will hinder how we hear from Him through the Holy Spirit.
